the mutterings of the prophet

the enemy is headless
but visible to me
and though I come to the dry places
where people are hungry
and where they are drunk
I shall not fear

my eye
is the shape seeker
the falcon whistles for me
the dew answers my call

I know how to watch slowly
dust rises about me
and the rattlesnake uncoils
in my footprints

through blue-dark evening
a young girl flees with blood on her face
singing a song of slit throat
and shattered brain

I hear her thoughts
I bring my mornings to her door
In willow baskets
